Colorflow Expressive Portraits - DAY ONE
Utilizing my new color palette book - Colorflow* - and an array of gorgeous photo references we will dive deep into both color and expressive portraits! We will explore the importance of value and understanding light and dark forms and patterns on the face.
We will begin in black and white using charcoal and graphite to first learn more about drawing the face, proportions, angles and more. Then choosing color palettes from my Colorflow book we will work on creating interesting, unique and harmonious portraits! By first aligning with our color palette we will be able to better focus on decisions and choices in our work. I will be talking in depth about color and emotion as well as using color to add drama to finish a piece and truly make it special!
We will also embrace both our dominant and non-dominant hands and experience what each one can offer us. Using my non-dominant hand is how I begin all my expressive drawing now. It has been a revolutionary development in my work and I am amazed time and time again how students also witness something beautiful emerge from this exploration. I will also be showing you how I use my most loved mediums in ways that best emphasize your own unique mark making and expression!
Colorflow Encaustic Collage - DAY TWO
The second day we will explore encaustic collage and I’ll be sharing my very favorite techniques and ways to create mysterious, poetic and evocative pieces. Again, we will be discussing our color choices first and using this information as a guide as we gather together collage elements to create our pieces. This is such a soothing way to work and I know you are going to love it! We will be incorporating vintage ephemera, oil pastels, pan pastels and more. Some of our sketches from the first day may even become covered in wax - because I promise, once you experience the beauty of wax you will want to cover everything in it!
On our final day we will continue to work on our projects and have time for a group discussion and show and tell.
