Do you love children’s book illustrations? Have you often looked at these mesmerizing and enchanting books wondering how they create their images? If so,  join me for a workshop filled with imagination, inspiration and creativity!

During our time together, we’ll dive into the world of children’s book illustrations and study a select group famous illustrators.  We’ll discover inspiration resources, explore new artistic techniques and create dynamic art influenced by their styles.  Using my skills and experience as an artist and designer, I show you how to look at these illustrations as references to fuel your creative fire, refine your artistic skills and strengthen your creative voice! (And, yes! All levels of artists are absolutely encouraged to attend!)

To begin, we’ll study a bit about the selected artists followed by a walkthrough of their children’s book and illustration examples.  This is an important step in honoring those who have done the hard work and given us their creative heart in the form of a book. It also humanizes the folks we want to learn from and keeps us in line with honest creative apprenticing. Next, we’ll explore techniques, color palettes, inspirations and overall artistic approach for each illustrator.  Ultimately paving the way for some creative watercolor-ish mixed-media play where we will be creating artwork inspired by the illustrators and you will learn how to incorporate these components into your personal creative style.

In this workshop, it’s my intention to help you learn in fun, new ways and grow your art!

    • We’ll have story time and a reading corner filled with my favorite children’s books. Sigh. So much goodness!
    • You’ll learn how to examine illustrations (storybooks - both classic and trending provided) in an organized way to practice and infuse new techniques and subjects into your own art.
    • Tap into your imagination and create more unique artwork through fun exercises, prompts and challenges. (In other words, get ready for a bit of crafty fun to get your imagination working at top speed!)
    • Participate in the exercises and demonstrations throughout the weekend to grow your watercolor skillset. I will play with lots of stuff but my go-to will always be highly detailed watercolor illustrations. (Demonstrations will include a peak into my own book that I am developing - Pippity Poe + Co.)

In this workshop, we have access to Donna’s amazing studio and all the classroom supplies that come with it! This is a MIXED-MEDIA workshop with a giant dose of pencil work and watercolor.

    • Oh, and If watercolor isn’t your thing but you love my art, you can play with acrylic, inks, gouache, pens, etc. - this will be a true mixed-media experience!
    • If you have a go-to medium you love, Danielle highly encourages you to bring your favorites like a set of pens, inks or paints. While it’s always amazing to play with all sorts of goodness in Donna’s classroom, sometimes it makes your learning curve a bit easier when you use your stuff.
    • Oh, and this applies to your watercolors too. A beautiful limited-palette of Daniel Smith watercolors will be supplied and there are a ton of tubes to purchase in the on-site shop! With that said, feel free to bring your own expanded palette to get the most out of the weekend!
