Are You Ready to Oil Paint?

Understanding Oil, Basic Techniques, Step by Step and Process Tips!

Whether you're brand new to painting or have already painted in other mediums such as watercolors or acrylics, you'll find that working with oil paints are definitely fun once you learn the basics.

I love oil paints for their rich colors, lush texture, and their slow drying time, which allows plenty of time to work on a painting.

Even if you have no background in art, I make painting in oil easy and will get you on your way to creating your first oil painting!

Oil Painting Supply List – Everything You Need To Start Oil Painting
  • 3 surfaces 8x10 or larger (these can be watercolor paper, art boards, canvases, but NO JOURNALS. if using unprimed surface give a quick coat of gesso to prime)
  • Oil paints: I like Van Gogh brand, they have little smell and are great quality for the price. But when just starting out any affordable brand works perfect. I always suggest starting with a rainbow, ROY G BIV style but here are some suggestions for colors that I like to work with.
    • Reds: Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson
    • Orange: Cadmium orange or I like to mix my own oranges
    • Yellows: Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre
    • Green: Earth green or I like to mix my own greens
    • Blue: Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue
    • Purple: Dioxazine Purple
    • Black: Carbon or Lamp black
    • White: Titanium White
    • Brown: Raw Umber, Burnt Umber
  • Paint Solvent: Gambsol
  • Paint brushes: My favorite are Rosemary & Co Ivory, rounded flat, size 4-8. However, as a beginner, I would suggest any brush that says for oils and is affordable.
  • Palette knife
  • Palette: I like using a glass palette of palette paper
  • Tabletop easel
  • dawn dish detergent (this cleans your brushes!!)
  • apron
  • I like to wear rubber gloves
  • Paper Towels
