Expressive Folk Art Faces
July 16-18, 2021
In three days together, I’ll demo different ways I bring my folk art faces to life, but more importantly, I want to help you dive more deeply into who you are, what you know, what you believe, what you’ve experienced, what you like, what you see- you get the picture!- so that you create faces (and everything else) with freedom of expression and a childlike willingness to TRY for the sake of learning rather than production. For me, faces are about mark-making and using those marks to build something familiar to the eye rather than creating a realistic face or something that’s “recognizable”.
The creative process (the doing, the making, the exploring) is the space in which you gain cumulative understanding about your authentic creative voice. Over time, you learn to pay attention to how you are feeling about the color, texture, line, shape, etc. and how everything is playing together. You learn what you like- what’s you. It’s so important to pay attention to the process and to always be willing to be a learner, to let things “fall apart” (or even make things fall apart) as you’re working in order to get to that place that is more free and authentic. I think the in-between is the best part of art making because in it you must look, listen, pay attention. It’s where you learn to remain open to possibility. Art that comes from that place, that seeking place, communicates. It speaks. All in all, expressive faces are a series of marks that come from your hand in your creative process, and the only rule maker for your art is you. I’m excited to share my process with you in the hopes that seeing another artist at work will ignite your curiosity and help you flourish in your own creative practice. Let’s do this thing!
