Q: “What is the age range of the class?”
A: At Donna Downey Studios, we believe that age has little influence over a student’s interest and ability in making art. For instance, a 14-year-old may have little interest in art and therefor lack the skills and focus required to complete a given project. While a 6-year-old, who loves art, can achieve an unlimited amount of artistic growth simply as a result of focus.
So instead of focusing on an age range/limitation, we choose to create prerequisites based on interest and ability to focus on art for an hour at a time. As long as the student can say yes to the following questions, they are welcome in the class regardless of age.
- Does the student like making art?
- Can the student focus on the task at hand for an hour at a time? We will have breaks throughout the day and lunch time too!
If the answer is yes, they are welcome and encouraged to sign up. It is very possible we may have a range from 5 to 18 years of age. In the case of varying ability levels, additional complexity or simplicity will be given to the individual student to maintain a healthy level of challenge for each student's level. Those who finish faster will be given more challenging work and those who need more time to complete daily tasks will have reduced complexities within their process to ensure everyone is learning, working, and growing throughout the entire class without being bored or overwhelmed. We do not compare student's work to one another. We do celebrate growth and achievement on an individual basis.
It is my purpose as a teacher to educate students by demonstration and conversation. To challenge the student to grow in skill, up to and beyond the point of confidence in one’s competence. To respectfully push the student to embrace whatever process is necessary to bravely embark on even the most ambitious of artistic visions. That the student would progress beyond the desire to compare one’s work to another’s and instead embrace the unique potential within. Most importantly, I strive to cultivate a love for the arts and stir up the student’s pleasure in the process of creative expression.
Workshops Policies : Half-day, full-day, multi-day workshops, and special events are scheduled throughout the year. Once you purchase a workshop you will be enrolled.
Due to limited class size, purchased spots for all workshops are transferable but payment is non-refundable. What this means: If you buy a class spot and are unable to attend, and if there is a waiting list of students that has formed, we will put you in contact with the first person on the list to whom you can offer your class spot. If the person on the list accepts, then that person will need to pay you for your spot and once that transaction is complete and both parties are satisfied, we will transfer your spot to the other person. If you are unable to attend and there is no waiting list, we will unfortunately be unable to provide refunds.
Emergency Cancelations : In the very rare event of an emergency or unavoidable natural disaster or act of God, one of the 6 classes may be cancelled. In this situation, you will be notified via email and phone call. We will work to reschedule a make up class where all customers/students can participate. If the whole group can not get together for one make up class, multiple gatherings may occur to ensure customer satisfaction.
If you would like to enroll in a workshop that has been sold out, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and you will be put on a waiting list.
